LIVING ROOM: ISHARA - ROOM #4

Version 1: (Hanna’s edits)

The elegance of this Victorian home felt like the perfect setting to give form to a long-held dream: a showhouse space that seamlessly blends Sindhu’s Indian roots with a contemporary design sensibility. A space that balances East and West; living comfortably in both worlds.

With its high ceilings, classic picture moulding, and dramatic curved bay window, the living room was envisioned as a celebration of heritage craft, thoughtfully reimagined and layered with modern furnishings. The hand painted motifs, mirror work and fretwork details date back centuries, originating in ancient India.

The bespoke furniture is the result of close collaboration. Designed by Sindhu and brought to life by artists and makers through hand painting, carving, and leatherwork using time-honored techniques, each piece is elevated to the level of collectible design. Its silhouettes remain intentionally modern, allowing the furniture to resonate with contemporary architecture and the way we live today.

COLLECTIBLE DESIGN

  • Pichh Pouf: Hand-painted brass poufs featuring a verdant garden, each meticulously painted by an artist in the Indian miniature style known as Pichhwai. Originating in 17th-century India, this intricate style is celebrated for its lush landscapes and depictions of animals such as cows, lotuses, and peacocks. The pouf itself is crafted from Burma teak with brass detailing by a skilled maker in Hyderabad, bringing together a rich mix of materials and artisanal techniques.

  • Zari Sari Demilune: Crafted from ash wood, this demilune is sculpted to evoke the drape of a sari. A gold-foiled border recalls the richness of traditional Indian textiles, while intricately hand-carved floral motifs create an embossed effect, echoing the raised texture and intricacy of fine embroidery.

  • Pondicherry Cocktail Table: Shaped not quite as a circle, this piece reimagines the traditional placement of table legs. Beautifully leather-wrapped and crafted from Burma teak, it features a brass top and reflects the artistry of Pondicherry, a town shaped by its history as a French colony since 1674.

SINDHU PERURI

Growing up in India, Sindhu recalls her grandfather, a textile merchant, unfurling exquisite hand-loomed sarees blended from silk, cotton, and metallic threads. The vivid colors, dynamic prints, and ornate gold embroidery inspired her love for design and craftsmanship.

Fast forward a few decades,  this reverence for artisan-made pieces and rich texture has fused with California’s relaxed luxury. The result? A signature style that’s elegant and bold, yet artfully restrained and carefully curated.

With over ten years of experience in interior architecture and design, she finds immense joy in designing warm, inviting, layered and deeply personal spaces that are tailor-made for the people who inhabit them.

THE SAN FRANCISCO DECORATOR SHOWCASE

The San Francisco Decorator Showcase began in 1977, when the late Nan Rosenblatt — a University High School parent and accomplished interior designer — and Philip Fernandez, the first president of the school’s Parents Association, envisioned an event that would bring the design community together in support of education. In its first year, the Showcase raised $26,000, laying the foundation for a legacy that continues to transform lives. Over nearly five decades, the event has united the Bay Area’s most visionary designers, artists, and craftspeople, raising over $21 million to benefit the University High School Financial Aid Program.

This year’s event will be held at 2935 Pacific Avenue in Pacific Heights. The elegant 9,400 sq. ft. home features a stunning 2,150 sq. ft. rooftop deck with breathtaking city and bay views. The home will be open to the public from April 25 through May 25, 2026. Tickets may be purchased here, with all proceeds benefitting San Francisco University High School’s financial aid program.
