CLUBHOUSE - Lafayette, California

Playful, polished, and unapologetically bold, the Clubhouse is a secondary home designed entirely for entertaining, wellness, and joy. Located next door to the client’s primary residence, the new-build structure feels like a boutique resort-meets-private club, complete with a golf simulator, full gym, bar, kitchen and ping pong lounge, an upper lounge and office, and expansive outdoor spaces. “It was a true ‘party house,’ and therefore we were aesthetically unrestricted,” says designer Maria. That freedom—combined with a trusting, creative relationship between designer and client—resulted in a layered, globally sourced, and exuberantly styled home.

The Clubhouse was the third collaboration between Maria and this longtime client. “I often refer to this client as the ‘yes’ client,” Maria explains. “Just about everything I show her, she loves and says yes to. Dream client personified.” Their first project together began in 2020, with a renovation of the main residence. When the adjacent property became available, the client tasked Maria with creating a structure that would complement the original home architecturally, while offering a completely different lifestyle experience. Architect Scott Thompsen brought that vision to life with a Cape Cod-inspired structure clad in grey-washed cedar shingles, white columns, and iron lanterns to tie the two houses together.

Inside, the interiors explode with personality. Pierre Frey textiles and wallcoverings appear in nearly every room—earning the nickname “the house that Pierre Frey built.” A painterly green striped sofa curves around an oversized leaf-motif rug in the living room, while floor-to-ceiling botanical drapery and Atelier 001 lighting add drama. The rooms are filled with custom cabinetry, richly textured materials, and furnishings sourced from across Europe, South America, and beyond. Outdoors, the tone is sun-soaked and stylish, featuring Dedon woven daybeds, punchy umbrellas, and a professional Kalamazoo kitchen anchored by bold tile and Hermès tableware.

From lighting design and architectural detailing to millwork, furniture, and finishes, Maria’s studio oversaw every element of the project. With its soaring ceilings, ten-foot sliding doors, and seamless indoor-outdoor flow, the Clubhouse is a vibrant, joyful escape—a celebration of what’s possible when a designer and client create without limits.
