NATURE ALWAYS WINS
"Nature Always Wins" is a study of the dichotomy between the strength and the fragility of our natural world. It's based on the recognition that nature always finds its balance, whether in cooperation with, or in spite of, humankind. A delicate, three-dimensional wall covering at the entry wall features hand-formed and hand-painted butterflies, representing the delicate nature of our environment. In contrast, the same wall is anchored by a console table of hand-carved Sho Sugi Ban cedar and stone, representing nature’s unshakable strength and determination in the face of all that our environment is contending with, from wildfires to rising seas. The room exclusively features products that are designed or crafted in California and is an exploration of the wealth of resources that exist right in our own backyard. All makers and manufacturers are within a 500-mile radius on the Showcase house, thus lowering the environmental footprint and the overall embodied energy of the design, all while supporting the local economy and the extraordinary artists and fabricators who help to fuel it.

ABOUT LEAP INTERIOR DESIGN
Firm Philosophy
Leap Interior Design is a full service design firm specializing in projects that marry unique combinations of contemporary and classic elements, creating timeless interiors that are inspired, livable and uniquely tailored to each client. Leap Interior Design is based in The Bay Area, Boulder & Palm Springs.
Design Philosophy
Since its inception, Leap Interior Design has consistently been driven by a mission to curate and elevate each client’s individual aesthetic. Co-founder Chelsea Brown aims to create interiors that are inviting, sophisticated and uniquely personal. Whether a client prefers casual elegance, understated minimalism or an eclectic mix, Chelsea draws upon a unique set of resources to achieve each client's vision in a way that is enduring and can be evolved and layered upon for years to come. She believes that design is not static; rather, it is an organic process that should evolve with each client over a lifetime. With a background in sustainable architecture and design, she seeks to apply these principles to all facets of design and encourages clients to select heirloom pieces from local artisans and craftsmen whenever possible. She is a strong believer that sustainable design does more than elevate the home, it elevates the community it exists within.
Bio, Chelsea Brown, LEED-AP
Chelsea grew up in Northern California and received a BA in Journalism from the University of Nevada, Reno. She began her career in marketing and advertising for various publications prior to her return to school to focus on interior architecture and design at Academy of Art University in San Francisco. She then climbed the ladder from interior design intern to Project Manager and Associate in the Workplace Interiors sector in DLR Group’s Denver office, where she spent five years. She also served as DLR Group’s Sustainability Lead for the Interiors group, a national role that involved the establishment of sustainability standards across the firm’s nationwide interiors practice as well as in-office standards to help DLR evolve its company-wide sustainability initiatives. In 2009, Chelsea co-founded Leap Interior Design in Denver, Colorado, and in 2012, she relocated home to the Bay Area to expand the firm’s reach into California and beyond. She lives in Marin with her husband, Phil, and son, Everett.
ABOUT ADERYN STUDIO
Philosophy
Good design is the result of good process. At Aderyn Studio, we are deeply dedicated to craft, and the direct connection between material, form and function lies at the heart of what we do. We go to great lengths to source local materials and urban hardwoods, and create all of our unique finishes - including our signature shou sugi ban finish - in-house, meticulously applying them using non-toxic methods that are safe for human beings and nature alike.
A fusion of high design, high craft and high touch, our furniture is designed for sitting, for eating, for working, for gathering. Our goal with every piece is to create furnishings that will last - loved and passed down as heirlooms for the next generation.
Founded by Phil and Chelsea Vaughn, Aderyn Studios is dedicated to creating warm, modern furnishings that stand the test of time. We fuse sophisticated, modern design with warm materials and hand-crafted detail. We create furniture for real life.
You could say that the origins of Aderyn Studio lie in our first date. From the minute we began sketching designs on a napkin, we knew we hand stumbled upon a rare event: two creative minds completely in sync. A general contractor who grew up in woodworking and an interior designer with a passion for form and finish, we founded our studio to feed our shared passion for good design, creating furniture that would honor and preserve the beauty of nature.
Our roots run deep. Our studio is the distillation of generations of artists, designers and builders. Phil grew up carving things out of wood alongside his grandfather, who was especially fond of carving birds. Inspired by his legacy, we named our studio “aderyn” - the Welch word for “bird.” We know he would be proud of what we have created together.
Bio, Phil Vaughn
While Phil Vaughn grew up in Los Angeles, his heart and mind has always been amongst the trees, whether at his family's 100-year old cabin in Tahoe, the high Sierra backcountry, or in his workshop. His love of woodworking was born while working alongside his grandfather, a teacher and hobbyist woodworker. Phil graduated from Pepperdine University with a BA in Political Science, which led to an unlikely turn into construction. He gained invaluable experience as a project manager, working for celebrity clientele on some of the most notable real estate throughout the Hollywood Hills and beyond. He co-founded his own general contracting company, SD Custom Construction, in 2007 and became one of San Diego's top deck contractors while continuing his woodworking education at Palomar College of Woodworking. He relocated to Marin to co-found Aderyn Studio with his wife in 2015.
