THE ANGLER’S HIDEAWAY

“When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy.” — Rumi

The Angler’s Hideaway was conceived as a sophisticated and soothing space where one goes to get away from it all, get lost in something else, and indulge in that which makes one’s heart and soul full. Its cozy size and semi-circular window provide the perfect spot to perch, daydream, and tinker.

Inspired by a love of nature and the serenity of days spent fly fishing, this room takes a turn away from the typically male-dominated pastime and lends itself to another interpretation of the “angler”. This is not a dusty, dingy, fishing-rod-on-the-wall kind of space.  Instead, it is an elegant refuge for the fly fisherwoman. She is a sophisticated city dweller who also appreciates the great outdoors, and all of the things that drew her into the sport are reflected in this space.

Captivated by beautiful mountain towns and vast river valleys, she sees the dichotomy between the ruggedness and the elegance of her days on the river. They are slow, quiet, and almost meditative. The sound of the river running is peaceful and the colors are rich. Textures abound – from craggy rocks and spiky grass, to smooth water and slick, speckled trout swimming downstream.

Her hideaway casts this rugged beauty in an elegant, yet relaxed light. The green textured wallpaper forms a bridge between the walls and the treetops just outside the window. Leather elements, burl, and the chair upholstered in a bark-like pattern all nod to nature’s ruggedness. A fine Italian walnut desk was chosen for its legs which resemble antlers. A custom wool rug suggests water flowing over rocks. The elegant handmade drinks table uses a bundle of fir held together with brass to uphold its quartz top.

Above all, the Angler’s Hideaway is a place to pause, slow down, and be inspired by Mother Nature – the most talented artist of us all.

ABOUT ALEXIS RING

Alexis Ring is the founder and owner of Alexis Ring Interior Design, a full-service interior design firm based in San Francisco, CA. Known for creating spaces that embrace both refinement and comfort, her interiors reflect a deep respect for classic design combined with a fresh take on modern living.

After beginning her career with Jay Jeffers and then Kelly Hohla Interiors, Alexis founded her own firm in 2020. She approaches each project by taking time to truly understand how her clients want to live in their homes, then skillfully interprets their design goals to create their most cherished spaces.

When not focused on indoor spaces, Alexis finds inspiration and rejuvenation outdoors as an avid cyclist, swimmer, and skier. She can often be found enjoying time in the Sierras, biking on Mount Tam, or strolling along Crissy Field with her dog, Carlos.

ABOUT THE SAN FRANCISCO DECORATOR SHOWCASE

The story of the San Francisco Decorator Showcase began in 1977, when Nan Rosenblatt, a former San Francisco University High School parent and an accomplished interior designer, and Philip Fernandez, the first president of the school’s Parents Association, conceived the first Showcase to raise funds for University’s financial aid program. In its first year, the Showcase raised $26,000 – since then it has raised over $18 million to benefit the program.

This year’s event will be held at 2898 Broadway, located at the top of Pacific Heights. Commissioned in 1899 by his father Duane Bliss, architect Walter D. Bliss designed this magnificent home in Dutch Colonial Revival style with panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay. The home will be open to the public from April 27 through May 27, 2024. Tickets may be purchased here with all proceeds benefitting the San Francisco University High School’s financial aid program.
